Restoring Data from Snapshots

Restoring from snapshots should be treated as an operational procedure. The exact action depends on the protected resource and the reason for recovery.

Before restoring

  • Identify the affected share, target or volume.
  • Confirm the required recovery point and its timestamp.
  • Notify connected users or applications before changing live data.
  • Create a fresh snapshot before performing destructive recovery if the current state may still be needed.

Restore approaches

  • Use file-level restore when only a small number of files or folders are affected.
  • Use full resource rollback only when the whole share or target must return to the snapshot state.
  • For block targets, stop or disconnect client access before rollback to avoid filesystem inconsistency.

After restore

  1. Verify the restored data from a client.
  2. Check application consistency.
  3. Confirm snapshot schedule status.
  4. Document the incident, selected snapshot and final result.

If a snapshot action fails, check whether snapshot space is reserved and whether the selected resource supports the requested snapshot operation.
